Should I have solar panels installed on my house now?

Residential Solar Power Question

I really want to install solar power in my house , I live in Southern California so we get plenty of sun.

My house needs air conditioning but I know it used loads of power and I feel that my carbon footprint is large enough without adding to it. If I install solar power units onto my house will I be able to get enough power to install and run air conditioning?

My brother suggested that I should use solar power to run everything else in my home  instead as air con pulls so much power.

I have been looking at and reading about solar panels for some time, so is now the right time to install solar power in my home or should I wait for solar technology to improve more?
