Can I add solar panels to my house myself?

Residential Solar Power Question

Since we live in a very high sun area,  I'm thinking solar panels could be a great way to get at least some of our energy.

The thing is that I don't really have the money to pay a solar power company to come and install it all for me, but before I start looking at where to buy the stuff I am wondering whether it is even possible to buy a solar power kit for my house and install it all myself.

The other option is to buy the kit and then pay an electrician to help me, but I am happy to do any carpentry stuff that is needed.
